What is a CCRC and is it the Right Choice for You?

October 2022

A continuing care retirement community, a CCRC, allows a person to live and age at one location with access to multiple levels of care without having to relocated to multiple locations. It’s designed so you can likely stay in the same place with the same people even if your health changes down the road…this can provide a sense of calmness to the resident and family members.

Many Baptist Village Communities (BVC) offer varying stages of senior adult living and services. Residents can continue to focus on the aspects of life that make them happy, while getting the level of care they need at that time…and couples with differing needs can continue to stay together.

Planning for future lifestyle and healthcare needs can be difficult because we don’t know how our health might change. We can start by understanding the kinds of help we might want in the future.

Everyone has a unique situation, and one thing is certain, we will experience changes in our life and health as we age…the place we choose to live doesn’t have to be one of those changes.

Moving into a senior adult community is a significant life decision. Maybe you have great memories in your home or you have great neighbors that you don’t want to leave. Moving into a 55+ community can really be a renewal in life because it’s a stress-free environment.

When considering senior adult lifestyle communities, many independent senior adults tend to focus on lifestyle—programs, amenities and services that will take away the burden of home care, and allow them stay active and social. It’s common to focus on what is needed now, without much thought to how those needs may change over time.

As we age, our priorities in healthcare and lifestyle needs evolve, and it’s important to plan for how our needs may change in the future. Finding a community that can grow with us and provide a range of care, services, and activities can dramatically improve long-term outcomes.

When we embrace a positive approach to long-term planning and care, we are able live more independently. It’s better for our overall health and well-being to age in a location that provides the right programs, staffing, and support. The amenities and daily support, such as meal service, transportation, housekeeping, home care and maintenance, give us more time to spend doing what brings us joy.

Did you know falls are the leading cause of injury and trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults?

The risk of falling increases even more when cognitive decline is a factor. Good nutrition, daily activities, and access to rehabilitation services promote physical and mental stimulation, which can help build and maintain the strength and range of motion needed to avoid a dangerous fall. BVC offers these services and much more.

It’s important as we age, to stay engaged in a fulfilling social network. Residents at BVC have access to special events, community socials, and volunteer opportunities. And with so many neighbors, it’s easy to find people who share your interests.

A 2019 study by the Gerontological Society of America found adults over 65 years of age who interacted with people beyond their usual social circle were more likely to have higher levels of physical activity and greater emotional well-being.

Adults with larger social networks and more frequent interactions with others experience less depression and cognitive decline than people who are isolated or experience minimal social engagement.

Talk with your family and your doctor about how changes to your health could affect your lifestyle in the future.

Not a Baptist? Not a problem. You do not have to be Baptist to live in one of our communities. Residents enjoy living among neighbors in a place with a feeling of family and togetherness.
